Intro/Letter From the Editor - Ryan Main - Sales

As July draws to a close and we prepare for the 'dog days of summer', there is a lot to report on from your friends at Pik-A-Dilly RV Centre.  As you'll notice below, this month we are void of an article from the mind of our sales manager Dave Shepherd.  I'm sure you'll all join me in offering congratulations to his family as he has his hands full with his youngest daughter's wedding this weekend.  While we're offering congrats to the Shepherd family, please join with me in offering the best of luck to Caitlin Hayden as she departs the Pik-A-Dilly family to return to school this fall to study Natural Resources Management Technology.  Her hard work and dedication in her time here will surely be missed.

So sit back, relax, and enjoy a quick read as we present some 'green' information this month.  And if you read this on your monitor, you're doing your part in 'going green' by not using paper!  I hope everyone of you have a great August long weekend, and the weather co-operates wherever you may be camping.

Dealership News - Don Main - General Manager

Announcement:

All good growing businesses have management available to make and carry out decisions that affect the company, it's team members, and of course it's customers. I am pleased to announce that Ryan Main has recently assumed the position of Assistant Manager with Pik-A-Dilly RV Centre. Ryan is a third generation family member to work in the dealership, and for the past few years has been involved primarily in the sales department, but simultaneously learning the inner workings of the other departments in the dealership. Ryan has achieved his business diploma, and attended many industry-training programs, including the Total Dealership Management training program available through the Spader Group in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He is also attending management meetings held three times annually that are attended by 20 high-quality dealers from across Canada. Ryan has worked hard to be ready for this next challenge, and our entire team is excited for him. He will continue to sell as usual, but will take over a number of management duties from myself in his daily routine.

Please join me in wishing Ryan all the best with this exciting new opportunity.

Service Department News - Heather Arthurson - Service Manager

In this month's newsletter I would like to discuss several ways of 'Going Green' with your RV.

  1. Instead of having to run your generator or use your shore cord to keep your batteries charged, one can install solar panels on your rooftop.
  2. If you can't go solar, you may consider a propane generator instead of a gas model. Propane fuel is cleaner and produces less CO emissions. With your BBQ you can use propane instead of charcoal, which has, once again, cleaner emissions.
  3. One can replace all exterior lights on the RV as well, with incandescent bulbs that have LED lighting. LED lights do not require as much power as the incandescent bulbs.
  4. Another green idea is to use paper products (plates, bowls, cups and paper bags) instead of plastic. Plastic takes forever to break down in our landfills.
  5. Another way to generate lower emissions is to slow down while pulling or driving your RV. The emissions will be less and you'll get better mileage as well.

There are many ideas out there, these are just a few quick ideas and tips for you to "Go Green".

Parts Department News - Jim Bridger - Parts Manager

Wow!!  What a great summer it's been so far, with lot's more to come.

With everyone worrying nowadays about the environment, more and more companies are creating 'green' products which are safer for your family and less harmful to the environment.

One way you can help is with your choice in holding tank chemicals.  Many of these chemicals that are available contain formaldehyde, which is nasty stuff.  Some of the reasons you won't want to use a product that contains formaldehyde include:

  • It is a toxic material that can leech it's way into lakes, rivers and streams
  • Most campgrounds are hooked to a sewage field and it can cause damage to the field
  • Your children or pets can be easily poisoned if they ingest formaldehyde

Here at Pik-A-Dilly we sell only environmentally friendly products made by the Dometic Corporation.  Sealand natural green works great.

Remember to look for the green symbols when choosing these and any other products.  If you have any questions about "going green" in your RV supplies, give us a call and let us assist you.

There's still plenty of summer left to be had, so grab your "green" products and head out there and enjoy.

Campfire Recipe

Cooking on the Campfire with Tinfoil

Foil is our friend when it comes to camping. No more limitations on what kinds of foods can go on camping trips; foil can help you cook anything, anywhere.

If you thought to bring the foil, you can wrap just about any food and cook it - potatoes, corn-on-the-cob, hamburger. The trick is to get a good, hot fire going, let it burn down to nothing but red-hot coals, then toss the food directly onto the coals. Use two layers of foil to keep the foods protected from the charcoal, and turn every few minutes to prevent burning. Wrap a hamburger patty or steak, sliced potatoes, sliced carrots and a couple of tomato slices in foil, cook, and there’s your entire meal.

Form foil into pots, pans and skillets simply by shaping several layers into the design you want. Handles are fine to use for manipulating the pan on the fire, but don’t try to pick the pan up by the foil handle. It won’t hold the pot, and your food will be on the ground. But you can stack three long layers of foil on top of each other, then wrap the end of the foil around a small log. Do the same to the other end, then place the logs and foil over the fire. Poke holes in the foil to get the smokey taste of the charcoal.
